Jonah {Summer 2014}

Size: No check-ups, but looks to be roughly 40.5" tall and around 37lbs. He's in between 3T and 4T now-- still in 3T shorts (though they are getting small), 3T/4T shirts (a lot of 3T shirts got short on him) and 4T pajamas. He is wearing size 9 shoes, 4T undies and bigger socks (size medium 10-13). Let's just say he definitely grew this summer! He looks really tall to me but his numbers don't really show it. I think that last measurement we got in April wasn't accurate at 40" because he looks like he grew waaay more than just 1/2".

Potty Training: Aren't kids only supposed to have one regression with potty training?! Sheesh. June proved to be a regression-type month again, and I'm guessing it had to do with me being off from work so much and being home more than usual. He wasn't having that many accidents at home, but he started to have 1 accident a day at school. One thing we have noticed is that he seems to "not care" when he does have an accident and doesn't even bother to tell us. And of course, when we ask him about it, he'll tell us he spilled water. :) Over the summer it seemed to get better and less frequent, but we're still having these "don't care" issues where he just pees on himself and doesn't tell anyone.

June:

Illness: None to speak of this month, per se. That being said, Jonah has had a lot of nosebleeds over the past several months. Especially some without reason or cause that have concerned us. I spoke to my pediatrician a couple times about it and we will try to minimize them with simple remedies but recognize that he may need greater treatment than that (Randy has a history of nosebleeds and I just learned that I did too, but I had mine cauterized at a young age and now I don't suffer from them). One in particular gave the daycare a big scare--Jonah had a nosebleed the night before and the next day, he accidentally just barely bumped heads with another little boy and it started bleeding. And when his nose bleeds, it bleeds. Some of the staff were a little panicked and were going to call 911 over the amount of blood. Luckily, several other staff members were aware of his history and were able to stop the bleeding before anything else happened! This isn't an "illness" either, but I'll put it here: After our trip to Florida, Jonah got a little constipated and since it "hurt" he avoided going to the bathroom so it turned into a vicious cycle we battle with for 1-2 weeks before he was finally "back to normal".

Favorites: Jonah loves to go to Jumpits! with all the inflatables where he can bounce and slide.

Funnies: A frisbee is a "froze-bee"; When Jonah went to the dentist at the end of the month, unbeknownst to me, he had picked up a dead beetle and brought it in. When I asked him to sit down in the chair, he opened his hand and asked what to do with it. He refused to let anyone dispose of it, and we had to put it in a cup and then re-home him outside after the appointment. But he definitely showed off that beetle on the way out the door, though!

Firsts: He had 2 of his swim lessons and they went okay at best. Aside from that, he can now swim with his puddle jumper on (which is a huge accomplishment given that he screamed and cried when I tried to put him in the water at the beginning of the summer). Jonah got to eat his first Slurpee this month! Jonah had his first pediatric dentist appointment, but refused to let them do a full cleaning. That being said, he has been able to transition from the training toothpaste to regular kids' toothpaste and he does an awesome job of not swallowing the toothpaste and then spitting it into the sink.

Observations: Jonah did not want to touch the animals at the aquarium touch tank in either aquarium we visited--it took a small tank in the Florida Aquarium to entice him enough to touch them, and then he loved it! Maybe it's just because it is the summer, but Jonah has developed an absolute love and fascination with bugs. All kinds of bugs, and he loves to catch them in his bug catcher."

July:

Illness: Jonah has continued to have nosebleeds. We have tried the saline mist, but he continued to have them. We are now trying vaseline via q-tip (which he does surprisingly well with) in his nose and he seems to be a little bit better. Needless to say, we have an ENT appointment next month to assess why he has so many.

Favorites: Initially, he hated the fireworks on 4th of July. Then we had convinced him to watch them with sunglasses on. And eventually got those off and he loved them--including no hesitation with holding a sparkler! He is still talking about them. Also on the 4th of July, Jonah loved wearing his blue mustache! He thought it was hysterical. Jonah has loved these squirt cannons his Mimi got him--and has really good aim with them. This month Jonah has learned about the planets at school and seems to be completely enthralled with them--he almost has all of them memorized and can spurt out several facts about the planets. Jonah continues to also have a love of coins! He doesn't have them all quite right when you ask him, but he certainly gives a hearty effort.

Firsts: First trip up north--New Jersey and New York! Jonah has gotten a bit better with using the "practice" chopsticks at dinner. Jonah has learned how to pick up and carry the cat around the house--she hates it. He took his last 2 swim lessons the first 2 days of the month and he did not do well at all. Truthfully, it was a complete disaster and he refused to do anything but scream and cry because he was so scared. She had to hold him through everything and he wouldn't work with her on the stairs in putting his face in the water. Luckily, she's awesome and we decided that maybe he'll do better next year and keep going with the puddle jumper and practicing in the tub. Jonah went to a Rome Braves game and had a good time--he's starting to learn the game which is pretty cool and got his first Dippin' Dots. And on the trip to NJ/NY, he got his first Italian Ice. The real kind.

Funnies: I absolutely love how he pronounces the word  "sensitive"--it's "sens-ah-teeve"! Everything is "last week" or "in a few weeks". Scrapes/bites = scabs = picked scabs. Upon questioning him about why he keeps picking his scabs, he tells me "because I like when they bleed."  Jonah has memorized his first joke and he loves to tell it to everyone:

Observations: We have asked him a lot, but he just cannot remember his birthday! He always thinks it's in June. Jonah is actually starting to get good with math. Any addition under 5, he usually gets right. Anything over 5 gets hard for him, but with a little prompting, he can figure it out. He still loves to organize and categorize things by color, shape, size, etc. He's also pretty good at jigsaw puzzles--he likes the 24 piece puzzles on my iPad and can do up to 32 pieces on a floor puzzle.

August:

Illness: Running nose started up, technically it is a "bacteria" but we're kinda lame-o parents and didn't get thr Rx filled. Whoops. That being said, he went to the ENT and here's the verdict: he doesn't think he needs tubes anymore (fingers crossed this winter is kind to us); he has some superficial blood vessels in his nose that are probably attributed to nosebleeds when they get irritated (duh) like during allergy season or he bumps his nose, etc. He doesn't want to cauterize them unless they're causing problems and right now (again, fingers crossed) they don't seem to be flared up. The plan is just to continue with nasal saline spray and vaseline via q-tip in his nose when they seem dry. And third verdict: his adenoids are huge. Bummer. This, I am afraid, we are going to have to watch in the future because I do think he snores some and he's had strep throat a couple times already.

Favorites: Ghosts! I blame the Curious George story about the costume party. Right now, he's insistent he's going to be a ghost for Halloween.

Firsts: It took him all summer, but he'll now put his whole face under water in the tub/pool for a moment and he's been known to lay down in the water without panicking--maybe we'll get around to more successful swim lessons next summer! Jonah (somehow) learned how to cross his eyes. Jonah has learned the Pledge of Allegiance.

Funnies: Jonah's first day of Pre-K3-- I asked Jonah if he made any new friends and he promptly told me "no, I didn't make any... God made me, and you, and Noley too!" Jonah's second joke: "What did the triangle say to the circle? You're pointless!" He still loves to say "upside over" for upside down.

Observations: Jonah can't get the proper use of  "she" and "her" yet--"Her's going over there". Jonah moved up in classrooms to Pre-K3 with Ms. Julie and he's already doing really well. I am excited for him because he is back to saying "I like school!" and is sad when I tell him he's not going. I hated when he told me he didn't like school in his last class, but that was a hard transition for him. Jonah is getting better at sounding out words and guessing which letter words start with now. Still able to find some sight words in books.

Just like that, Summer 2014 came to a close! It was such a fun summer!
