2 years {Jonah}

Size: At Jonah's 2 year appointment, he weighed in at 30 pounds (73%), head circumference was 19.25in (56%) and was 35.5in tall (78%). Jonah is primarily wearing all 24 month and 2T clothes. (I put a pair of 18 month jeans on him the other day and Randy asked me if I bought him skinny jeans! Hahaha, he looked a little ridiculous!) He's moved  up to size 5 diapers for day and night, and wears 6-6.5 in shoes.

Motor Development: Jonah jumps off steps and can walk up the stairs without our help, but still seems uneasy about coming down a flight of stairs without holding on to our hand (he'll slide down on his belly without hesitation). He seems to enjoy coloring more with chalk or crayons, but doesn't have the proper grip yet. He's been trying like crazy to learn how to catch a ball--throws it up in the air, announces "catch", but it always falls to the ground. It's clear he knows what it means to catch a ball, he just hasn't figured out the coordination. And, this month he has expressed interested in a new sport: tennis! We've brought him out to the courts with us a couple times and he just loves to carry Randy's racquet around with him trying to hit the ball. Maybe Santa will bring him his very own pee-wee-sized racquet for Christmas?! ;)

Language: He can count from one to ten in spanish and one to twelve in english very well. He basically knows all of his letters by sight, just occasionally mixes up "k" for "x" and "v" for "y", although I can't say that he recites the alphabet with 100% accuracy just yet. Jonah has gotten soooo much better with his colors--I can confidently say that he does know red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black and white. This past month he has really started to show interest in opposites: up/down, dark/light, big/little, hot/cold, soft/loud. He knows all of his shapes, including rectangle, hexagon and diamond--those are hard!

New Things: Jonah will take his shirt off when asked and can almost get his jacket off without help. He can start to pull down his pants or his diaper, but gets stuck somewhere around the knees. Now that the colder weather is (sort of) here, Jonah has been much more accepting of wearing a hat. He has had a kickin' cold this month complete with snottiness galore and some deep coughs... which of course, means that he also got an ear infection. Jonah got to visit his old pal Santa again this year... this time he brought baby brother along--Jonah, not so impressed.

Potty Training: um, yeah... does he have to be potty trained by kindergarten?? 6th grade? Senior in high school? Oy, we haven't really made any good progress this past month. Part of the problem is (sadly) our laziness with pushing the issue. He wears those pull-up diapers (Huggies Little Movers slip-on) so he's getting trained on the whole up/down thing and we have underwear for him when he actually starts to use the potty with any regularity. I think part of the problem is he just thinks it's story time when he sits on the potty and will read like 6-8 books while sitting there, get bored and either get up from the little potty, or start requesting to get down from the big potty. I think we're just going to have to buckle down and actually come up with a little bit of a schedule. I have tried the "airing out" approach a couple times which has led to nothing more than him peeing on the floor twice. Hmph. One positive about it is he has started to mention the potty and ask to use the potty--he just hasn't done anything when we bring him to the potty! He does seem much more aware and conversational regarding his wetness or poopiness, which I guess is a good sign. If there is ever poop (or Nolan's poop), he will always say "ew, yucky poop" and had a major meltdown with my mom over a poopy blow-out he had! I'm thinking he's starting to not like to be dirty--that may be a reason to start using the potty!

Jonah-isms: "knick knack" is a new favorite song ~ in response to "how old are you?", he replies "two happy" or "two, ah, ah, ah, ahhh" (like The Count from Sesame Street--that was totally Randy's doing) ~ when he sees a UGA logo or bulldog, he says "goooo dawgs, woof woof woof" ~ when something doesn't go as planned, he says "happens" and shrugs his shoulders (I always tell him "it happens" when he gets frustrated with something) ~ he likes to ask for "some" of anything and everything ~ At the end of singing Happy Birthday, he will say "candle", then pretend to blow it out

Toddler Moments: Well, he is a toddler so these moments are going to happen. This is such a tough age because they want so much independence and yet can't have that much so it's a constant struggle. He continues to be put in time-out, for an increasingly longer period (not quite up to 2 whole minutes yet), and that seems to be a big punishment for him. Sometimes the threat of time-out will get him to listen and other times not.

 What does a 2 year old want for breakfast on his birthday? Pancake and pureed squash! Ha. (sorry for the nasty snot coming out of his nose--he had a bloody nose earlier I think from the cold he has been battling)

Unbelievable to me... my little baby boy who made me a mama is TWO!
Birthday party post coming up next!
