9 months

Yep, this kid has officially been out of utero as long as he was in. Kind of hard to believe it's been that long already! I know, I'm a week late... but in all fairness, his 9 month appointment was today. :)

He officially weighed in a shade over 20lbs and is 28 inches long. This puts him in the 50th percentile for height and length. Just your average 9 month old. Except for his huge head. Ha! That noggin of his has crept up into the 75th percentile for head circumference! No wonder we have a hard time getting shirts on. :) My pediatrician has assured me that a big head means a big face, and people with big faces tend to be rated as "more attractive" - many celebrities have big faces, according to him. Maybe that's why Jonah is so darn cute! :) Or I'm just particularly biased.

So, remember how I loved the age he was at when I made my last post? Well, insert foot in mouth. I pretty much despised month 8. He was a crab. So far, the first week of month 9 has been better, so hopefully we're on the upswing and headed back to happy baby land. It's not that he was a miserable colicky, can't put him down, always sick and such... it's just that he wasn't himself.

Here were the issues with month 8:
- He had a persistently runny nose. Pretty much could have called him Rudolph, poor kiddo.
- He cut two teeth, so he was always drooling... with a runny nose. Needless to say, he was soaking wet all the time.
- He got hand, foot, mouth disease. Just to clarify, he wasn't all that sick with it. He never spiked a fever, continued to sleep through the night without problem, and mostly ate normal... but he did have a few blisters on his foot, one on his hand, and a few in his mouth. They have since cleared, but still probably added to his crabbiness.
- He was totally aware of the fact that every single classmate of his could crawl or walk, except him. So he spent many days pouting in his crib over that. Seriously, he would cry unless they set him down in his crib and he just watched from afar. So pitiful.

- And when he came home, he turned into super clingy spider monkey. Jonah would not sit and play on a regular basis by himself. Instead, he had a meltdown... which of course involved more drool and more snot.
- So he pretty much made no effort to figure out how to crawl for an entire month. Like, if I had to write a progress note on how much change he had made over the past 4 weeks... nada. But like I said earlier, I'm already enjoying the first week of month 9 because now he's all about it and almost has it figured out!
- While he became adventurous with some foods, he spent more than one night crying through dinner or pursing his lips together because he was boycotting dinner. Yeah, that's not gonna work.

So, despite these minor setbacks, we survived to see a new month. To take a look at the positives:
- Has has TWO teeth. Those bottom central incisors popped on through in the same week. On the Monday, the left one opened up and by Thursday of the same week, the right one opened up. Pretty much can't take a picture of it, but you can definitely see them in person. At this point, I don't really see any other signs of more teeth making an appearance any time soon.

- This week, he has started to make pre-crawling motions! He will happily get into quadruped and lurch forward. I'll put it this way: he can get anywhere he wants in his room if I set him down on the floor. It may not look conventional or seem efficient... or minimize rug burn... but he can get there. It's sort of a strange combination of rocking, hopping, diving across the carpet, and sliding his face. :) But he's happy. And voluntarily goes from sitting to tummy.
- He does love standing at tables, including his play table. No cruising independently, but will walk holding on to your hands pretty well, and not so much tippy-toe walking, but flat footed walking.

- He can feed himself most any small morsel of food, except for extra slimy/slippery chunks. My mom bought him some baby mum mums and he's really into those, along with graham crackers. Puffs and cheerios are also a favorite. And he's down to one bottle during the day, nursing in the morning and at night. He chews really well. Or so I think. :) New favorite food: black beans.
- He met his brother (from another mother)! One of my good friends/roommates from Georgia College sadly moved away to Wisconsin 5 years ago, got married and had a baby boy, Grant, almost exactly one month after Jonah was born. Totally not planned, but so awesome it worked out that way. Autumn, her hubby Matt, and G man came to visit south Georgia, so we had to pack up and visit! J and G were so cute together and had quite the time hanging out. I'm so glad we were able to work out a trip to see them when they were in town!

- Jonah loves banging on things, and therefore loves his play drum!

- Bath time is amazingly fun! He's a little water bug.

- He's started screeching. Like high pitched squeal/screech noises at any time of the day. One morning, he was screeching in his crib just for the fun of it. And now he cackles as well. It's like this cough/laugh/squeal all mixed into one. Clearly he's testing out all the sounds he can make. His favorite letters right now are probably still vowels, but more preference to "o" and "a" now. Jonah likes b, d, l and some r-ish sounds.
- Jonah has figured out how to clap, and loves to show it off. His favorite place to clap... riding in the car. Speaking of car, we've made the next car seat purchase, we just need to install it and give it a test ride. This kiddo is getting much too big to be toting around in that infant carrier!

Here's to hoping month 9 continues to be a better month filled with less crabbiness and more happiness! :)
